Pikt tells you which card to use
Most card lists rank cards you could open. Pikt compares the cards you already carry for this purchase, then shows the estimated dollar difference and why the recommendation fits.
This is personal card routing: match each purchase to the right card from your wallet. Pikt recommends the card; you still pay with it yourself.
Card Check, Pikt Checkout, ChatGPT, and Claude can use the same wallet-aware recommendation.
The general answer, before your wallet
The Platinum Card from American Express costs $895 a year. Capital One Venture X costs $395. Venture X earns 2x miles on everyday purchases, while Platinum earns 1x point outside flights and prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel. Platinum has more statement credits and wider lounge access, but most credits reset monthly, quarterly, or twice a year, and several need enrollment. Choose Platinum only if you'd use enough of those credits to cover the $500 gap. You still pay with your own card. Extra is estimated; issuers decide.

Why the answer varies
The likely winner depends on the cards a person carries, the merchant category, active bonus categories and offers, reward values, earnings caps, known fees, and issuer terms. Card acceptance can also remove an otherwise higher-earning option. A public guide is a general comparison until a user provides their own wallet.
Pikt personalizes each estimate to the cards you already carry, the purchase details, and any reward values you set. It learns from confirmed card choices over time, while verified rewards math remains the basis for the result and the explanation. Use Card Check for a recommendation based on the cards you carry.
Why the usual card can earn less
People with a premium travel card often use it for everything to get their money's worth from the fee. With Platinum, that usually means 1x on dining, groceries, and most daily spending, even when another card in the same wallet earns more. The fee is paid either way. At the register, the question is which card earns more on that purchase.
How Pikt compares your cards
Enter the store and amount. Pikt estimates which card in your wallet is likely to earn the most. It shows the estimated dollar difference and a short reason. Issuers decide the final rewards. Online, Pikt Checkout shows this estimate before you pay. For recurring bills, Subscriptions compares the cards you already carry and explains how to change the card on file. In a store, run Card Check on your phone before you pay. A card built around flights shouldn't get used out of habit at the grocery store, and Card Check shows when another card you carry earns more.
$395 or $895 comes first
Venture X has a $395 annual fee. The Platinum Card has an $895 annual fee. That $500 gap is due every year, whether you travel or not.
Venture X includes a $300 annual credit for bookings through Capital One Travel. Platinum lists a longer set of statement credits, including up to $600 a year in hotel credits (up to $300 twice a year), up to $200 a year in airline fee credits, up to $300 a year in digital entertainment credits ($25 a month), up to $400 a year at Resy restaurants ($100 a quarter), and Uber Cash each month. Several need enrollment, and each has its own terms.
A credit is worth what you would have spent anyway. A $25 monthly entertainment credit is worth $300 a year only if you already pay for an eligible service every month. Add up the credits you'd use without changing your habits, then compare that total with the fee.
Where each card earns more
Venture X earns 10x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, 5x on flights and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel, and 2x on everything else.
Platinum earns 5x Membership Rewards points on flights booked directly with airlines or through American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 of those purchases per calendar year. It also earns 5x on prepaid hotels booked through American Express Travel. Most other purchases earn 1x.
On a $100 grocery run, Venture X earns 200 miles and Platinum earns 100 points. On a $500 flight booked directly with the airline, Platinum earns 2,500 points and Venture X earns 1,000 miles, because Venture X's 5x applies only to flights booked through Capital One Travel.
Airport lounges
Venture X primary cardholders can use Capital One Lounge and Landing locations and can enroll in Priority Pass for access to participating lounges.
Platinum includes Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass membership (enrollment required), and 10 Delta Sky Club visits when you fly an eligible Delta flight.
Platinum's lounge list is wider. That only matters if you fly through airports that have those lounges. Entry rules and space limits are set by each issuer and lounge.
Points, miles, and transfer partners
Both programs can move rewards to airline and hotel partners. Capital One miles go to Capital One's partners, and Membership Rewards points go to American Express partners.
A point has no single fixed cash value. The airline or hotel program sets the award price, and taxes and fees may still apply. Set the value you actually get in Card Check, so both cards are compared in dollars.
Who each card fits
Venture X fits someone who wants one travel card that also earns well on daily spending, books through Capital One Travel at least now and then, and wants a lower fee.
Platinum fits someone who flies often, uses Centurion or Delta Sky Club lounges, and would use most of the credits anyway. Because it earns 1x on most everyday purchases, it works best next to a card that earns more at restaurants, grocery stores, and everywhere else.
The better account for your travel habits isn't always the better card for tonight's charge. One card can win the fee math while another earns more at the register.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Amex Platinum worth it over Venture X?
- Only if you'd use enough of Platinum's credits and lounges to cover the $500 fee gap. Count the credits you'd use without changing your habits. If that total doesn't beat $500, Venture X costs less and earns more on everyday purchases.
- Which card earns more on everyday spending?
- Venture X. It earns 2x miles on purchases outside its travel portal bonuses. Platinum earns 1x point on most purchases that aren't flights or prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel.
- What is the best premium travel card?
- It depends on the credits and lounges you'd actually use. Venture X has the lower fee and the stronger everyday rate. Platinum has more credits and lounge options for more than twice the fee. Chase Sapphire Reserve is the other common premium choice. Whichever you carry, Card Check compares it with the rest of your wallet on each purchase.
