Best card for Costco and cards Costco accepts (2026)
Published by Pikt. Published . Updated .
2% cash back is a useful benchmark at Costco, but acceptance comes first. U.S. warehouses accept Visa credit cards. They do not list Mastercard or American Express credit cards as warehouse payment methods. The Costco Anywhere Visa earns 2% on Costco and Costco.com purchases. Wells Fargo Active Cash earns 2 cents in cash rewards per dollar, and Freedom Unlimited earns 1.5% cash back. The best credit card for Costco is the accepted Visa in your wallet with the highest eligible return for that charge. You still pay with your own card. Extra is estimated; issuers decide.
Quick decision table
| Card | Best for | Earn rate | Annual fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wells Fargo Active Cash (opens in a new tab) | Flat-rate Visa | 2 cents per $1 | $0 |
| Freedom Unlimited (opens in a new tab) | Visa at the warehouse | 1.5% at Costco | $0 |
| Costco Anywhere Visa (opens in a new tab) | Costco + gas | 2% at Costco | $0 card fee; paid membership required |
Why the answer varies
The likely winner depends on the cards a person carries, the merchant category, active bonus categories and offers, reward values, earnings caps, known fees, and issuer terms. Card acceptance can also remove an otherwise higher-earning option. A public guide is a general comparison until a user provides their own wallet.
Pikt personalizes each estimate to the cards you already carry, the purchase details, and any reward values you set. It compares supported earn rates, eligible offers, caps, and card constraints, then explains the result. Use Card Check for a recommendation based on the cards you carry.
Why the usual card can earn less
A grocery card may earn only its base rate at Costco because issuers usually classify the store as a wholesale club. U.S. warehouses accept Visa credit cards.
How Pikt compares your cards
Enter the store and amount. Pikt estimates which card in your wallet is likely to earn the most, with the dollar difference and a short reason. Issuers decide. Online, Pikt Checkout names that pick before you click pay. On recurring bills, Subscriptions shows which card is likely to earn the most and how to put it on file. Coming next: Pikt Signal will put your best card on your lock screen when you're ready to pay in stores. At Costco, Pikt names an accepted card. A grocery bonus limited to U.S. supermarkets usually does not apply. The linked Costco catalog page shows a broader ranking for this merchant.
Visa eligibility comes before the earn rate
U.S. Costco warehouses accept all Visa cards. Costco.com also accepts Mastercard, but the warehouse does not. American Express credit cards are not on Costco's current U.S. warehouse payment list.
The best card for Costco at a U.S. warehouse must first be an accepted Visa. The website needs its own check because it accepts another credit card network.
How the Costco Anywhere Visa works
The Costco Anywhere Visa by Citi earns 2% cash back on Costco and Costco.com purchases. It has no annual card fee with an active paid Costco membership. Cash back is issued as an annual credit card reward certificate after the February billing statement closes.
The co-brand earns 5% at Costco gas and 4% at other eligible gas and EV charging locations. Those rates share a $7,000 yearly purchase cap, then fall to 1%. A warehouse aisle purchase still earns the separate 2% Costco rate.
Compare the annual certificate and membership requirement with the simpler redemption on another Visa you carry. The co-brand name does not make it the automatic winner.
A numbered example: $180 at the warehouse door
1. U.S. Costco warehouses take Visa only. An Amex in the wallet cannot pay at that door, even if it is your grocery card.
2. Pikt codes warehouse clubs as wholesale (category 5300), not supermarket (5411). A 6% U.S. supermarket bonus does not apply to that $180.
3. Card Check then names the highest-earning Visa you actually carry — often a 2% catch-all or the Costco Anywhere Visa — and shows the dollar difference versus your habit card.
costco.com is a different network question than the warehouse door. Do not assume the in-store Visa rule for the website.
The ranked catalog page is illustration across Pikt's card list. Your wallet may differ.
Gas at Costco is not the warehouse aisle
Costco fuel is often a separate category from the warehouse floor. A card that earns extra at Costco gas can lose at the register, and the reverse is true. Run Card Check on the pump and on the warehouse as two purchases if you need both answers.
What to do next
Open Card Check. Enter Costco and the warehouse total. Confirm the named card is a Visa you actually carry.
For the website, run Card Check again as costco.com. Do not reuse the warehouse Visa rule without checking.
Limits of the estimate
The dollar difference ranks the cards you already carry. It is not cash in hand unless that card pays cash back. Points convert at the rate you set, or at Pikt's published fallback for that program.
Your issuer makes the final reward decision. If the statement posts a different category than Pikt used, the statement is the source of truth for that charge.
Pikt never issues a card, stores a card number, or submits checkout. Offers that must be activated in an issuer app pay nothing until you activate them. Nearby (lock-screen, in store) is not shipped.
If two cards land within a few cents, use the named card or the one you prefer. A tiny gap is still a ranking, not a broken estimate.
Frequently asked questions
- What credit cards does Costco accept in the U.S.?
- U.S. Costco warehouses accept Visa credit cards today. They do not accept Mastercard or American Express credit cards at the warehouse door. Debit and cash rules can differ — this guide is about credit cards.
- Did Costco take Mastercard?
- Yes, historically. Under an older network agreement, U.S. Costco warehouses took Mastercard. That is no longer the rule: U.S. warehouses do not accept Costco Mastercard credit cards at the door now. Use a Visa.
- Is the Costco Anywhere Visa always the best Costco credit card?
- Not automatically. The Costco Visa co-brand earns 2% at Costco with a paid membership and no card annual fee. Active Cash also lands at 2 cents per dollar as a general Visa. Card Check ranks the Visa cards you actually carry for that warehouse total — it does not crown Costco Anywhere as the organic winner.
- Does Costco count for grocery bonuses?
- Usually no. Issuers that pay extra at U.S. supermarkets typically exclude wholesale clubs. You still pay with your own card — the store's category, not the food in the cart, sets the bonus.
- Is costco.com the same as the warehouse for rewards?
- No. The website can accept networks the warehouse door does not. Run Card Check separately for costco.com and for the in-store ticket. For a catalog-wide ranking illustration, see /best-card/costco.
